Just as you may protect your home with a security system, your computer needs protection, too.
Visiting the wrong web site or opening a suspicious email can quickly let problems in if you’re not protected. Viruses, once on your computer, can steal information, take over your computer and do damage that can’t easily be undone. But antivirus software is used to prevent, find and remove viruses, worms, spyware and other harmful programs on your computer.
If your antivirus software is on a CD:
Step 1: Start by loading the CD.
Place the antivirus software disk into your CD drive. The CD drive is usually located on the right side of your laptop or on the front of your computer tower.
Step 2: Open the antivirus software.
Once inserted into the CD drive, a box with the contents of the CD should pop up on your computer screen. If the CD doesn’t open automatically, click on “Start”, “My Computer” then double-click the CD icon to open it.
Step 3: Install the software step-by-step.
Step 4: Wait for the software to install.
Once you’re done with setup, the software should begin installing; you may have to wait a few moments.
Step 5: Restart your computer so the changes take effect.
When it’s finished, click on “done” and restart your computer.
Step 6: Keep your antivirus up to date.
Congratulations, your install is complete! While there are automatic scans and updates, it’s a good idea to update your software regularly.
If you’re downloading your antivirus software from the web:
Step 1: Use a trusted site for downloads.
Before you download anything online, make sure you’re using a reliable site. Step 3: Install the software.
The software should download automatically. If it doesn’t: click on “Window” and open your Downloads file. Double-click on the antivirus program you’ve downloaded to begin installation.
