How Do I Get Ready for the Test?

If you recently dropped out of the 11th or 12th grade, you may be able to take the test without a study course. If you dropped out longer than a year ago or did not go to 11th or 12th grade, you should probably take a GED study course. Teachers and tutors in these courses can help you figure out how much you need to study to pass the test.

There are several ways to prepare you to take the GED test. You can:

1. Sign up for a GED Prep course at a local school or training center.

2. Study at home with a GED Prep book. There are several good books on the market. Some of the better books are:

  • "Everything You Need to Score High on the GED" by Seymour Barasch
  • "Cracking the GED, 2005" by Geoff Martz
  • "Peterson's GED Success, 2005" by Marion Castellucci

You can get these books at your local bookstore or public library, or you can order them online at Amazon.com. To order online, you will need a credit card. To get to that site, click here

3. Take an online GED Course. There are several courses available online that will help you prepare for the GED. You usually have to pay to take one of these courses. One of the better GED course sites is:
http://www.gedonline.org/ ($50 for a 4-month membership)

4. Study at home while watching TV. Many local public television stations offer free GED courses that you can watch on TV. Check your local listings or you can call (800) 354-9067 (toll-free) for more information.

The GED is available in English, Spanish and French. Based on local needs, each testing center is given the choice of which tests they purchase to administer.

National GED rules provide that you may retake a GED which a non-passing score was received. You may take one subject up to three times in one year. If you have not passed it after the third time, you must wait until the next year to take it again. Some states have a waiting period between when you may re-test.
