Would You be Able to Live on $970 a Month?
The average monthly Social Security retirement benefits check is just under $1000. It’s a starting point, but Social Security may not be enough. It’s only a small portion of what you’ll need to live when you retire.
With Social Security, you get a cash payment into a bank account or onto an EBT Card every month after your retirement.
Benefits of Social Security
- Social Security does the work for you by keeping track of your earnings throughout your work life and returning a portion of it to you each month after your retirement. You’ve stored up all that money over the years and Social Security lets you access that money.
- The amount of benefits you’ll receive depends on your age of retirement. The Social Security Administration considers 67 as the full retirement age for most people, but you can retire as early as age 62 and still receive some benefits. What will your retirement age be?
Problems with Social Security
- People who retire now receive the government money they saved over the course of their lives. However, the future of this program is uncertain with less people working and more people retired than when the program was first designed. Changes will need to be made to keep the program going.
- One problem is that some immigrants (mostly undocumented workers) cannot receive Social Security benefits from the government even if they’ve paid Social Security funds to their employer.
I am almost (half month to go) my full retirement age 66 but still work.
I know that if I delay to collect my social security pension until 70 years old my benefits increase by 8% monthly.
But what if I start collect my SS pension and work while 70 years old or later how much will be monthly
increase of my SS pension?
Thank you.
Should an individual decide to collect their SS benefit at the age of 62, and choose to continue to work, I understand the max amount they could earn is $37,500 up to the age of 65. After 65 there is no max on the amount one can earn.
My question is; Has dollar limit of $37,500 been discontinued or change to "no max between the age of 62 and 65?
How do you find out about how much you would qualify for? Is there a website you can do that on?
