Prescription Drug Programs

Question: Are there any programs that can help make my medication more affordable?

Answer from Anna Lynch, Program and Operations Coordinator, Coalition of Community Health Clinics

Yes. Part of finding a program starts with talking to your doctor. They are usually willing to work with you if you just ask. Also, choosing generic drugs over the name brand can save you a lot of money. If you need to use a brand name medication, check with the company that makes the drug to find out if there’s an assistance program available for your prescription. Use Rx Assist to learn the company name or to find out if there’s a generic version of the drug you need.

Another way to keep costs down is to order your prescriptions online and have them delivered to you. Rx Outreach is an online pharmacy that offers low-cost medications to people who are uninsured or have limited prescription drug coverage.

Learn How to Find the Right Prescription Drug Program

  1. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Discussing your situation could help you save money, time and stress. Your doctor may be able to set you up on a plan directly, help you fill out the application forms, or offer other suggestions that can help make your medication more affordable.

  2. Find an assistance program. There are several assistance programs that offer free or low-cost prescription drugs for people who have limited incomes or are uninsured or underinsured:
    • Partnership for Prescription Assistance: This site can help you determine if you are eligible for a number of assistance programs. It walks you through the steps then helps you find a low-cost or sometimes free prescription program.
    • RX Assist: This site provides a large database of assistance programs. You can also look up your medication to find the drug makers’ information and generic alternatives.
    • Needy Meds: This site provides information on numerous health-related assistance programs, including prescription programs. It can also guide you through the application process and help you find the right program.
  3. Find out if you qualify for government programs. Do you know if you’re eligible for your state’s health plan? Government programs can help you access the healthcare you need and make your prescriptions more affordable. The two main government programs include:
    • Medicare: This government program offers low-cost prescriptions to patients who are 65 years of age or older, under 65 with certain disabilities, or any age with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure). Find out if you qualify. You can also compare Medicare prescription drug plans
    • Medicaid: Medicaidhelps low-income individuals afford prescriptions and other healthcare costs. Each state has its own eligibility guidelines for things like, income, resources and citizenship. Learn more.
