Interior Designer

Interior Designers need an eye for beauty, some artistic skills and the ability to work with demanding clients. Usually, interior designers work on the furnishings, colors, decorations and layouts for private homes.  Sometimes, they also design for businesses such as restaurants, office buildings and law offices.

What You Will Need To Get Started?
  • There is no certification required to be an interior designer, but a degree in interior design or art is definitely a plus.
  • Since the client pays for all the decorations, furniture, etc, you don’t need much start up equipment; however, you will need money for tools, advertising, and to pay the people that help you.
  • Establishing relationships with furniture, home decorating, and art stores in your area is also a good idea, because they can refer customers to you and give you discounts.
  • It is also important to make sure that your satisfied clients put the word out to their friends and family about your services. Growing this type of business is all about word of mouth.
  • You might want to consider getting a website. You can reach a lot of people with a good website. An attractive, eye catching and memorable website can increase confidence in your abilities, and allow potential clients to view your work.
  • You should speak to a lawyer about forming a legal business entity, such as an LLC, and about reviewing your contracts.

How Much Can I Make?
  • Interior decorators charge by the hour or they charge a percentage of the amount of merchandise that was purchased. For example if a client bought $20,000 worth of furniture and the decorator charged a 10 percent fee they would receive $2,000. Anywhere from 5 percent-15 percent or $20-$50 per hour is common.
