Informational Interviews

picture of women reading

Once you have a list of possible career contacts, you need to build relationships with these people, so they can help you. Start with the people who have lots of experience, know about your career goals, and are friendly and willing to help.

Ask them for an informational interview – an opportunity to talk to them more about your goals and their work.

Talking To Your Contacts

When you talk to your contacts, tell them about your career goals and tell them you want to learn more and get advice. Your personal mission statement will help you be clearer about your career goals.

Write Your Mission Statement

Practice saying your mission statement out loud so you can say it with confidence. Try it out on your friends and family and ask for their feedback. You might say something like:

"Jackie, I'm interested in becoming an occupational therapy assistant. I would like to go back to school to get more education, but right now I need experience with a related job. I've seen your work and know you have experience in the field. Do you have any ideas or advice you can share with me on advancing in this field? I would really appreciate your help."
