Fill Out a Job Application - The Rules for Filling out a Job Application the Right Way

Filling Out A Job Application

When filling out a job application it is important to remember to print clearly and answer all questions honestly. Most job applications ask for the same basic information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Social security number
  • Education
  • Names, addresses and phone numbers of the last 3 to 5 places you worked
  • Dates you worked your last jobs
  • Names of your previous supervisors
  • The date you are available to start
  • Some may ask for references other than your supervisors

Applying online:

It is very common these days to apply for a job on the Internet. It is fairly simple, and many times easier to apply for a job online instead of in person.

Most companies have applications you can fill out and submit on the Internet. Some have applications you can save on your computer, type in the answers and email back to them. Others may not have an application, but will ask you to email them a resume and cover letter.

When you apply for a job online, remember to:

Review the instructions provided by that company and follow them exactly. Make sure you address the email to the correct person. Many companies will tell you exactly what to type in the subject line of your email. Make sure to copy that exactly. If they do not, it is best to simply place the title of the job you are applying for in the subject line. Make sure to follow any other specific instructions given by the company, this will show you can follow directions and will help to make sure your application is not lost or thrown away.

  • Include a cover letter written specifically for that job opening.
  • It never hurts to include a letter of recommendation from a former supervisor.
  • Attach your resume in a commonly used format like Microsoft Word (.doc).
  • Remember to include everything you want to send in the same email. This will help to ensure that none of your information gets lost.

Many companies will send an automatic response for every application they receive. If they do not, you can always send a follow up email or make a follow up phone call a few days later just to make sure that your application was received
