What is Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

If you need help paying your heating or cooling bills, a program called LIHEAP may be able to help.

What is LIHEAP?
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities pay their heating or cooling bills. LIHEAP covers 5 million U.S. households a year. Two thirds of these families earn less than $8,000 per year. This federally-funded program offers:

  • Help paying your bills
  • Weatherization and energy-related home repairs
  • Assistance with an energy crisis, such as a broken heating or cooling system, an unusually hot or cold season, or a warning from your utility provider that your services will be cut off

Find Out If You Qualify
To qualify for LIHEAP, your household income must be below 150% of the federal poverty level. To learn more, contact your state’s LIHEAP office.
