Filing for unemployment benefits - How much can you get and for how long?
The amount of benefits you get depends on how much money you made in the 12 months before losing your job. When you’re approved, you’ll get a check once a week while you’re looking for work.
How do you know if you qualify before
filing for unemployment benefits?
You CAN generally file for unemployment if you answer "Yes" to all three of these
questions:
Did you earn enough money when you were working?
The amount of benefits you get depends on how much money you made in the 12 months before losing your job. This is called your base period. When you
file for
unemployment benefits, your caseworker will use your
base period to see if you earned enough money to qualify. The amount of money earned in your base period is different from state to state, so check with your local unemployment
insurance office to be sure.
