Jobs : How to Apply for Unemployment

How do you apply for unemployment benefits?

After you find out if you’re eligible for unemployment, it’s time for you to apply for unemployment benefits. The laws governing unemployment insurance vary from state to state, so contact your State Unemployment Insurance Agency as soon as you become unemployed. In some states, you can apply for unemployment benefits by telephone or over the internet.

What is unemployment insurance?

Unemployment insurance is a program paid for by employers and your tax dollars when you’re working. If you lose your job and it’s not your fault, you could qualify to apply for unemployment benefits.

Applying for unemployment benefits - How much can you get and for how long?

The amount of benefits you get depends on how much money you made in the 12 months before losing your job. When you’re approved, you’ll get a check once a week while you’re looking for work.

How do you know if you qualify before applying for unemployment benefits?

You CAN generally apply for unemployment if you answer "Yes" to all three of these questions:

Did you earn enough money when you were working?

The amount of benefits you get depends on how much money you made in the 12 months before losing your job. This is called your base period. When you apply for unemployment benefits, your caseworker will use your base period to see if you earned enough money to qualify. The amount of money earned in your base period is different from state to state, so check with your local unemployment insurance office to be sure.

Did you lose your last job through no fault of your own?

If you were laid off, fired, or left for a good reason (like an illness), you could qualify.

Are you willing and able to work again?

You must be ready, willing, and able to work. You can’t be too sick, injured, or disabled to work.

Is it possible to apply for unemployment benefits if you're working?

You may be able to apply for unemployment benefits if you’re working part-time, depending on your situation. Be sure to ask when you submit your application.
