Many adults enjoy having a drink from time to time. A small amount of wine - a glass or two a day - can even lower your risk of getting heart disease. But drinking too much can hurt those around you and could cost you your life. Alcohol affects your motor skills, judgment, and self-control. Drinking and driving and drinking while you're pregnant are very dangerous.

When you're addicted to drugs, your family and friends suffer, you have problems on your job, and you put yourself at risk for many health problems, including HIV/AIDS. Many people start using drugs when they're depressed about other problems and they want to escape. Using drugs doesn't make the problems go away.

Smoking

Tobacco use is the most common form of drug abuse. It’s also the most preventable cause of death in the United States. Smoking cigarettes, pipes, or cigars can cause heart attacks, strokes, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and cancers of the lung, larynx, mouth, esophagus, bladder, pancreas, and cervix. Using smokeless tobacco in any form (including chewing tobacco or snuff) is dangerous and can also lead to addiction and serious health conditions.
