I have been to the emergency room three different times over the past several months. I don't have health insurance and I just lost my job. I think it's insane that this is our healthcare system and that after 30 years of working and being upstanding citizen that I am now being harrassed by collections agencies. Anyone else going through this?

Dear So Stressed Out,
You are definitely not alone. There are many many Americans just like you who are being harrassed and even having things taken away from them (like their house) because of health care bills.
I took my baby to the emergency room just after I moved and was in between healthcare providers. I got stuck with a huge bill just because I didn't know where else to go for a relatively minor problem that needed an immediate solution. I think through sites like this one and atlanta.healthcareforyou.org I will be able to get the information I need to find a health care provider and insurance when I move to a new place, and any other time for that matter.
Have you tried to get on Medicare or Medicaid? They may pay for some of the charges retroactively.
