As I mom, I know the importance of breastfeeding and I highlighly encourage every woman to try it if she's able.  The benefits to your child far outway any cons, or inconveniences you may experience.  However, the other night I was at dinner with a group of friends and a women sitting at a table next to us, pulls out her breast (uncovered) and proceeds to feed her infant son.  Now, of course, when a baby is hungry they don't care what you're doing or where you're at.  But, would it have too much to exuse yourself from the table and feed your child in the restroom or out of public site?  Or perhaps pump before you leave the house, just in case you find yourself in a situation like this.  My dinner wasn't ruined because I'm a mom and I understand, but I had some childless friends at the table that were very distracted and weren't able to finish their meal.  I really don't think that's fair either.

I breastfed my son for 2 years and 2 days. When he was an infant, I kept a blanket with me to cover myself. A blanket works when they are infants. It doesn't work as they get older. When he was older, I pumped and kept feedings to an at-home activity. Overall, I think that breastfeeding is natural. It wouldn't bother me to see a mom feeding her infant at a restaurant since we're all there to eat, after all.

I suppose the question is, why would anyone be so upset by breastfeeding that they couldn't eat? Why would seeing a woman's breast kill some people's appetites, and should drive a woman to feed her baby in a bathroom where people urinate and defecate? In other countries people have this reaction to women showing ankles, wrists and faces. It's the same creepy over-sexualization of women's body parts that makes literally the most natural thing on earth be offensive to some. We need a paradigm shift where feeding your baby by the most natural means possible is not upsetting but heartwarming.

If you have ever had to get out of the bed and make a bottle at 4:30am, you'd have a new found appreciation and respect for breastfeeding. As a young man, I didn't care to see a woman breast feeding her child in public because I only saw a breast from a certain perspective (immaturity). As a father, I learned the value of it from a maternal, developmental and financial perspective. I respect and appreciate a mother's right and willingness to feed her child regardless of the location. It would be totally different if men were responsible for feeding the child every time he/she needs to be fed. If that were the case, breast feeding would be law.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and other professional health organizations recommend breastfeeding over formula for the health of babies and mothers. Breastfeeding is natural and people should get over it if it makes them uncomfortable to see a baby "eating."
